Jesse Jagz, born Jesse Garba Abaga on August 10, 1984, is a Nigerian rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer widely regarded as one of the most talented and experimental hip-hop artists in Africa. Known for blending hip-hop with reggae, dancehall, Afrobeats, and alternative sounds, Jesse Jagz has built a reputation as a lyrical genius and innovative music producer within the Nigerian music industry.

Early Life and Background

Jesse Jagz was born in Jos, Plateau State, Nigeria, into a musically inclined Christian family. He is of Jukun ethnicity from Taraba State. His father, Chris Abaga, is a pastor, while his mother, Lydia Abaga, is a gospel singer and counselor.

He grew up in a deeply musical environment alongside his siblings, including his elder brother, legendary rapper M.I Abaga. Jesse joined his church choir at the age of seven and learned how to play drums using his parents’ drum set. These early experiences laid the foundation for his future career in music production and performance.

Education

Jesse Jagz attended school in Jos and later gained admission to study Law at the university level. However, he did not complete the program, reportedly leaving school during his fourth year due to his growing passion and commitment to music.

Early Career and Musical Beginnings

Jesse Jagz began making music professionally in the early 2000s. In 2003, he recorded an unreleased album with a music group called Gospel Insanity. Shortly after, he formed another group known as Eleven Thirty, which gained popularity in Jos before disbanding in 2006.

He later adopted the stage name “Jesse Jagz,” with “JAG” representing the initials of his names: Jesse, Abaga, and Garba.

His breakthrough came with the release of the single “Africa” in 2006, which became popular across radio stations in Northern Nigeria. By 2007, several of his songs were already charting locally, establishing him as one of the most promising underground rappers and producers in Nigeria.

Chocolate City Era

In 2010, Jesse Jagz signed a record deal with Chocolate City, one of Nigeria’s leading music labels at the time. That same year, he released his debut studio album, “Jag of All Tradez.” The album showcased his versatility, combining hip-hop, reggae, dancehall, and experimental sounds.

During his time at Chocolate City, Jesse Jagz also became recognized as a top-tier producer, working with artists such as:

• Ice Prince

• Banky W

• Wizkid

• Majek Fashek

• Mode 9

His production style and lyrical ability earned him comparisons to international artist Kanye West due to his willingness to experiment with multiple genres and sounds.

Departure from Chocolate City and Jagz Nation

In 2013, Jesse Jagz voluntarily left Chocolate City and launched his independent music imprint, Jagz Nation. He explained in interviews that he wanted greater creative freedom and artistic control over his music.

Following his departure, he released his second studio album:

Jagz Nation, Vol. 1: Thy Nation Come (2013)

The album received critical acclaim for its originality and creativity. It featured songs such as:

He followed this with:

Jagz Nation, Vol. 2: Royal Niger Company (2014)

Return to Chocolate City and Later Projects

In 2015, Jesse Jagz briefly returned to Chocolate City and contributed heavily to the compilation album The Indestructible Choc Boi Nation.

However, he later departed again to maintain independent creative control.

In 2017, he released his fourth studio album:

Odysseus (2017)

The project combined Caribbean rhythms, dancehall influences, and hip-hop lyricism. The album title was inspired by the Greek king Odysseus and featured collaborations with artists including Burna Boy.

In 2020, he released the EP Garba, named after his traditional surname. The project blended Afropop, trap, folk music, and hip-hop storytelling.
