Full Biography of Grammy Awards winner, the African Giant, Burna Boy

Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu, professionally known as Burna Boy, is a Nigerian singer, songwriter, performer, and record producer widely recognized as one of the most influential African artists of his generation. Known globally by nicknames such as African Giant, Big 7, and ODG, Burna Boy played a major role in taking Afrofusion and Afrobeats to the international mainstream.

Early Life and Background

Burna Boy was born on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. He is of Engenni Ijaw descent from Ahoada West Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He was born into a family with strong ties to music and education. His mother, Bose Ogulu, later became his manager, while his grandfather, Benson Idonije, was famously known as the first manager of Afrobeat legend Fela Kuti.

As a child, Burna Boy showed musical talent very early. According to reports, he entertained family members by performing songs on restaurant tables and developed an interest in beat-making at around age 10 after receiving music production software from a classmate.

He spent part of his early life in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, and parts of West Africa, experiences that later shaped his musical identity and global perspective.

After completing secondary school in Nigeria, Burna Boy moved to the United Kingdom in 2008 to study Media Technology at the University of Sussex. He later transferred to Oxford Brookes University, where he studied Media Communications and Culture.
