Newspapers: 10 important headlines you need to know this Sunday morning

Good morning, world. Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers. Find out what you need to know this morning

1. Troops of Joint Task Force (North East) Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK) have buried soldiers killed during an encounter with Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State. The solemn burial ceremony took place at the Maimalari Military Cantonment Cemetery in Maiduguri this weekend.

2. Petrol prices have surged to about N1,080 per litre in parts of Lagos amid ongoing tension in the Middle East that has pushed crude oil prices higher in the international market. A market survey across several filling stations in Lagos on Saturday showed that the price of petrol, now ranges between N1,020 and N1,080 per litre, depending on the location and the filling station.

3. Troops of the Nigerian Army have shot dead a suspected kidnapper and rescued 19 abducted victims during a coordinated search-and-rescue operation in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The operation, conducted around Gidan Dogo, followed intelligence reports on the location of suspected terrorists responsible for the recent abduction of residents in the Byazhin area of Bwari.

4. Senate President, Godswill Akpabio on Saturday mocked the opposition in the build up for 2027 general election, bragging that they are confused and will remain so till the polls are concluded with ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) grabbing it all. Akpabio spoke while addressing the audience in Uyo where Governor Umo Eno led Akwa Ibom state received Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

5. The former governor of Anambra State and 2023 presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Mr Peter Obi, has said that no individual or group has a monopoly of violence, insisting that nobody can stop him from visiting any part of the country. Obi was reacting to the Benin City incident and the subsequent threats circulating on the social media warning him against visiting certain parts of the country.

6. Security operatives have rescued 12 kidnapped victims from Efeche Forest in Ette, Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of Enugu State, during a coordinated operation carried out on Friday, March 6, 2026. Following their rescue, the victims were taken to a hospital for medical attention and evaluation. Sources said they are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.

7. Violence erupted across parts of Oyo State on Saturday as suspected political thugs launched coordinated attacks on local government congresses organised by a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) loyal to Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, leaving several party members injured and property destroyed.

8. Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have neutralised several terrorists, including some of their key leaders, during midnight attacks while the insurgents attempted to overrun four military locations across Borno State. The attacks, which lasted for over five hours between Thursday and Friday, occurred around Konduga, Marte, Jakana and Mainok.

9. Suspected armed robbers trailed a man from a third-generation bank in Niger State and snatched over N10m from him on the road. The incident occurred on Friday after the man was said to have received payment from a client. It was learnt that the robbers overtook the man on Shiroro Road in Minna, seized the money and also made away with the victim’s Toyota Camry.

10. Cross River State Government has prohibited Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIO, from conducting roadside operations, limiting their activities to office-based duties. The decision follows protests from commercial transport operators over alleged harassment and steep penalties.
