1. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Sunday hosted a high-level delegation from the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), led by its Commander, General Dagvin Anderson, at the State House, Abuja. The meeting, which was attended by Nigeria’s top security leadership, was disclosed in a post on X by the Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, Dada Olusegun.

2. Pope Leo XIV, head of the Catholic Church, has expressed concerns over the recent wave of attacks on communities in Nigeria. In a statement posted on his official X account on Sunday, the pontiff said he received news of the violence with sorrow and concern.

3. Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, David Mark, has urged the National Assembly to pass the Electoral Act amendment bill and allow the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to determine whether real-time electronic transmission of election results is feasible. Mark spoke in Abuja while chairing the unveiling of a book titled “The Burden of Legislators in Nigeria”, authored by Senator Effiong Bob.

4. Senate President Godswill Akpabio has directed senators to reconvene for an emergency plenary session on Tuesday, February 10, 2026. The directive came days after the Senate rejected a proposal seeking mandatory electronic transmission of election results.

5. One of the newly deployed forest guards assigned to combat banditry in Kwara State has been killed during an operation in the forest. The incident occurred on Sunday in the Koro community, Ekiti Local Government Area of the state. It was gathered that forest guards, working alongside local vigilantes, had received intelligence about the presence of suspected armed bandits in the bush.

6. Kogi State Government has ordered the temporary closure of selected markets and motor parks in the western district of the state as part of intensified and coordinated security operations in the affected areas. The State Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, disclosed this on Sunday in Lokoja while briefing journalists.

7. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the permanent cancellation of the Monday sit-at-home directive across the South-East, effective Monday, February 9, 2026. The directive comes directly from IPOB leader Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who emphasized that the people should return to schools, workplaces, and markets without fear or intimidation.

8. Tragedy struck Kano State on Sunday as more than 30 people reportedly lost their lives in a road accident at Kwanar Barde, Gezawa Local Government Area. The accident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, involved a trailer heading toward Gujungu that allegedly crashed due to reckless driving. Several passengers sustained serious injuries in the crash.

9. Two persons were killed and one other injured on Sunday after a petrol-laden tanker exploded along the Ihiala area of the Onitsha–Owerri Road in Anambra State. The incident occurred opposite the office of the Federal Road Safety Corps at about 9:30 am, causing panic among motorists and residents.

10. A Canada-based Nigerian, Kayode Roberts, has been charged by the Toronto Police Service following an investigation into what authorities described as a suspected hate-motivated criminal harassment case. It was gathered from a statement published on the Toronto Police website on Sunday that the charges stem from a series of incidents alleged to have occurred between July 1 and December 29, 2025.
