Good morning, world. Here is today’s summary from Nigerian Newspapers. Find out the important things you need to know this today

The Presidency on Tuesday played down reports that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu tripped during a reception in Ankara, Türkiye, describing the incident as a minor stumble that did not in any way disrupt his official engagements. 2. The face-off between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike and the striking workers of the FCT Administration, FCTA, deepened yesterday as the latter vowed to continue their industrial action despite a court order and threats of sanctions. Among 14 other demands, the workers are demanding payment of five-month wage awards.

3. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has described President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration as more damaging to Nigeria’s national life than any military regime. Speaking as the Special Guest of Honour at the launch of The Loyalist, a book by African Democratic Congress National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, Atiku criticised the ruling All Progressives Congress for failing to deliver on its promises and undermining democratic governance.

4. Tension gripped Onitsha, the commercial hub of Anambra State, on Tuesday, following the continued closure of the Onitsha Main Market and its adjoining markets, as traders protested the enforcement of Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s directive, ordering markets to operate on Mondays. Heavy security presence, comprising soldiers, police officers took over the facility on Tuesday amid protest by traders.

5. President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve a bill seeking to amend the Court of Appeal Act to increase the number of justices from 70 to 110, as part of reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s appellate justice system. The request was conveyed in a letter addressed to the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, and read at plenary on Tuesday.

More than 197 Nigerian women, including teenage girls, were suspected to have lost their lives to gender-related violence between January 1 and December 31, 2025, according to DOHS Cares Foundation’s femicide report. The figure represents a sharp increase from 2024, when 133 Nigerian women and girls were allegedly killed under similar circumstances.

8. The British Transport Police has secured a six-year jail term for a Nigerian based in the United Kingdom, Daniel Odubanjo, for sexually assaulting a woman during a train journey. It was learnt on Tuesday from a statement published on the BTP website that Odubanjo was sentenced by the Chelmsford Crown Court on January 12 for offences including false imprisonment and sexual assault.

9. The All Progressives Congress in Kwara State has registered no fewer than 277,000 new members in the ongoing electronic registration exercise.
