1. There was a tense atmosphere and disquiet in Kano State on Monday, following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. The defection was rescheduled to Monday after the January 5 date. Although, there was no official speech or formal ceremony heralding the defection, it was clear that the Governor and his administration were no longer of the NNPP platform.
2. A total of 95 princes and princesses of Fusengbuwa Ruling House have indicated interest in the stool of Awujale of Ijebuland. The Olori Ebi of Fusengbuwa Ruling House who is also Otunba Jadiara, Lateef Owoyemi disclosed this today at the commencement of Nomination Meeting of the held at Bisi Rodipe Hall, GRA , Ijebu Ode.
3. Over 50 persons who participated in last Saturday’s protest in Ekpoma, Esan West local government area have been arrested. The suspects were arrested at various locations in Ekpoma. Several shops were looted and the Palace of the Onojie of Ekpoma was vandalised during the protest.
4. The National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Professor Nentawe Yilwatda, has directed all state coordinators of the party’s ongoing nationwide electronic membership registration exercise to ensure all members are registered. He also warned that failure by the coordinators to live up to their responsibility may cost them their appointments.
5. A former Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai, on Monday said the increasing deployment of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria for internal security is weakening the capacity of the Nigeria Police Force and other civilian security agencies. According to him, the military’s widespread presence across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, is gradually eroding the growth and effectiveness of the police.
6. Six members of a family have been found dead in their residence at Ogale Eleme community in Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State. The bodies were discovered on Sunday after police operatives forced open the door of the apartment at about 3pm. Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said preliminary investigations indicated possible generator fume poisoning.
7. Pastor Chris Okafor, the Senior Pastor of Mountain of Liberation and Miracles Ministries, has been questioned by the police in Lagos over multiple allegations levelled against him. Sources close to the investigation revealed that Pastor Okafor honoured the police invitation and was grilled for several hours at the State Criminal Investigations Department, Panti Street, Yaba, Lagos State.
8. Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have demanded N100m for the release of eight Imoga indigenes abducted on Friday night. The Okpahi of Imoga Kingdom, Oba Patrick Obajoye, who disclosed this on Monday in a telephone conversation, said the victims were kidnapped at Star Boy Hotel on Imoga-Ibillo Road in Edo North.
9. Suspected cultists have shot dead a man, identified as Tyohee Aseer, in the Wurukum area of Makurdi, Benue State. It was learnt that the incident occurred on Sunday night, which was barely a week after scores were killed in rival cult clashes across the state. In a statement issued on Monday by his media aide, Teran Nathaniel, the Executive Chairman of Makurdi Local Government Council, Joseph Keffi, condemned the killing.
10. Former governor of Imo State, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, has formally joined the African Democratic Congress, ADC. Ihedioha completed his registration on Monday, January 12, 2026, at Mbutu Ward, Aboh-Mbaise local government area of Imo State, where he was issued his official ADC membership card with Number 001.
