‎1. The Super Eagles have advanced to the semifinals of AFCON 2025 after they beat the Desert Foxes of Algeria 2-0 in Marrakech. The Eagles entered the match after a commanding 4-0 win over Mozambique in the Round of 16, having scored 12 goals in four matches, the tournament’s most prolific attack.

2. Former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has said Nigeria is in peril and urgently needs salvation, calling on Nigerians to unite and rescue the country from its current challenges. Tambuwal spoke at a colloquium organised to mark his 60th birthday, where he said the country had fallen far short of expectations.

3. Chairman of BUA Group, Abdul Samad Rabiu, has announced a cash reward of $1.5m and additional goal bonuses to the Super Eagles following their 2-0 victory against Algeria at the ongoing AFCON 2025. In a statement shared across his social media platforms, Rabiu praised the players for lifting the spirit of the nation with their performance and assured them of his support as they push for the title.

4. Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu should go home and sleep with his two eyes closed while waiting for the results of the 2027 presidential election in Rivers State. The Minister also insisted that nobody can push him and his supporters out or derail them from supporting the reelection of President Bola Tinubu for a second term in Rivers State.

5. Again, bandits struck in a community in Borgu local government area of Niger State, killing four and rustling cattles. This came barely one week after gunmen invaded Kasuwan Deji in the local government area, killing 42.

6. The Nigerian Air Force said its aircraft operating under the Joint Task Force of Operation Hadin Kai have successfully struck terrorist targets at Abbagajiri in the Timbuktu Triangle area of Lake Chad, clearing the way for a coordinated ground offensive by troops. The Director of Public Relations and Information, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, disclosed that the airstrikes were carried out during a coordinated air interdiction operation on 8 January 2026.

7. The leadership of the African Democratic Congress has set up a high-powered committee to engage political heavyweights in opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. A highly credible party official said the committee was not limiting its engagements to any single party as the ADC was seeking to strengthen opposition collaboration before the next polls.

8. Plateau State Government has announced the rescue of 25 individuals kidnapped on December 21, 2025, in the Wase Local Government Area. The Secretary to the State Government, Samuel Jatau, disclosed this on Saturday while briefing journalists at the Rayfield Government House in Jos.

9. Property worth millions of naira has been destroyed after a fire engulfed three vehicles and a community power house at a filling station in the Kara area of Kishi, Irepo Local Government Area of Oyo State. An eyewitness told our correspondent on Saturday that the incident occurred around 5 p.m. on Friday, following an explosion in the power house, which ignited nearby combustible materials and spread to adjoining property.

10. Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III, has issued a strong warning to oil companies operating in Itsekiri communities and the Niger Delta area, saying marginalisation and neglect of his people and land would no longer be accepted. He also advocated the setting up of a new moral foundation in the Niger-Delta, particularly in Itsekiri land.
