‎1. Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt on Friday barred the State Chief Judge, Justice Simeon Chibuzor Amadi, from receiving or acting on the letter from the Rivers State House of Assembly to constitute a panel to investigate the accusation of gross misconduct against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof Ngozi Odu. The presiding judge, Justice F. A. Fiberesima, gave the ruling while granting motions ex parte in the two suits filed by the governor and his deputy.

2. Vice President Kashim Shettima has departed Abuja to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at President Mamadi Doumbouya’s inauguration in Guinea-Conakry. The Vice President is also billed to attend the 56th Annual Meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, after his participation in the presidential inauguration in that West African country.

3. The Supreme Court has dismissed the appeal by Aminu Sule Lamido, the 34-year-old son of the former governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, against his conviction on the charge of failure to declare $40,000 cash at the airport and false declaration of foreign currency brought against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

4. Four members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, who recently withdrew from the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and Deputy Governor, Prof Ngozi Odu, have reversed their decision and declared full support for the process. The lawmakers are the Minority Leader of the House, Hon. Sylvanus Nwankwo; Peter Abbey, representing Degema Constituency; Barile Nwakoh of Khana Constituency I; and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II.

5. Edo State Deputy Governor, Hon Dennis Idahosa, on Friday denied having any rift with his principal, Governor Monday Okpebholo. He said any attempt to weaken the relationship between him and Okpebholo by trying to sow the seed of discord between them “is dead on arrival.”

6. The World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, IMF, have called for decisive measures to further reduce inflation in order to translate economic gains into tangible improvements in household welfare. The global lenders and development partners admitted that macro-economic gains are being recorded on the strength of reforms but declared that “inflation rate is still high.”

7. Former minister of transportation and a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, Rotimi Amaechi, has said the country’s electoral challenges have less to do with incumbency and more with the failures of the opposition. Addressing a gathering at a public lecture whose video trended on Friday, Amaechi said President Bola Tinubu “is not invincible,” insisting that opposition parties remained the country’s primary problem.

8. The Minister of Defence, Gen. Christopher Musa (retd), has said the Federal Government doesn’t pay ransom to kidnappers and terrorists. Speaking during an interview with BBC Hausa, a video of which was seen on Friday, the minister explained that most rescue efforts by the military are based on intelligence and swift action.

9. A film production crew has confirmed the death of a special effects artist, James Akaie, following an explosion during a filming session in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The incident was disclosed in a statement on his Instagram page on Friday by the producer and director of the film, James Abinibi, who described the development as tragic and deeply painful for the production team.

10. The naira extended gains on Friday to end the week on a good note against the United States dollar at the official foreign exchange market. The Central Bank of Nigeria’s data showed that the Naira further strengthened to N1,417.95 per dollar on Friday, up from N1,419.28 recorded on Thursday.
