Police in Plateau State have uncovered a center in Jos where people were being trained to commit internet fraud, commonly known as ‘yahoo-yahoo.’

Speaking to reporters at the Police Command Headquarters in Jos on Wednesday, Commissioner of Police Emmanuel Adeshina said that several individuals were arrested for crimes including internet fraud, robbery, gun running, and child trafficking.

According to the commissioner, the police received a tip on October 20, 2024, about a house where young boys, mostly fresh secondary school graduates, were being held and trained in online scams. Two men, Ateh Anthony Idoko and Daniel Idoko, both 23 years old, were identified as the leaders of the operation.

The victims had their phones taken away and were taught how to carry out scams, such as romance fraud, under threat of violence. Those who resisted were reportedly beaten with a horsewhip.

Following the report, officers from Rantya Division were sent to raid the house, where they arrested eleven people, including the two main suspects.

The police are continuing to investigate and are working to capture other suspects who escaped. Commissioner Adeshina assured the public that those involved will face legal action.
