On Sunday, August 25, a tragic accident occurred in Jos, the Plateau State capital, where a couple was crushed to death by a trailer while returning from a church service.

The victims, identified as Mr. and Mrs. Friday (Charity) Ajiji, members of Ruhaniya Baptist Church, Fudawa, were riding on a bike when they were hit by a trailer that had lost its control.

The trailer, reportedly loaded with goods, was in transit when it lost control and ran over the couple at the prominent Cele Bridge at Ring Road in Jos.

Security operatives quickly arrived at the scene to maintain order as youths from the area, angered by the incident, demanded to know the contents of the trailer. Some of the youths attempted to set the trailer ablaze, but security forces dispersed them by firing shots into the air.

This incident has sparked reactions and raised questions about the enforcement of the Plateau State governor’s Executive Order 003, which restricts trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles from passing through the city’s central area (Jos-Bukuru) between 6am and 9pm. Many are left wondering if the order is still being enforced.
