Tribunal Annuls Nasarawa Election, Awards Victory to PDP’s Ombugadu
The Nasarawa State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal has overturned the previous election results, naming David Ombugadu of the People’s Democratic Party as the rightful winner of the March 2023 gubernatorial race in a judgement delivered virtually on Monday.
Presiding Chairman Justice Ezekiel Ajayi nullified the prior Independent National Electoral Commission declaration that incumbent Governor Audu Alhaji Sule of the All Progressives Congress had won at the polls. Instead, the Tribunal ruled that complainant David Ombugadu, a two-term former House of Representatives member, was the lawfully elected governor based on evidence presented in the PDP’s petition.
This judicial decision reverses the outcome of the hotly contested March 18th governorship election in Nasarawa State after careful examination of claims of impropriety. The Tribunal determined that the results certified by INEC did not accurately reflect the valid ballots cast by voters.
Further details on the Tribunal’s review and evidentiary findings in this monumental judgement are forthcoming. This legal outcome has far-reaching implications for both the PDP and APC in Nasarawa State.
