Rapper Ziriok Reflects on Early Predatory Music Industry Encounter
Emerging Nigerian rapper Ziriok who hails from Kaduna State recently opened up about an exploitative encounter early in his career.
He recounted winning a small rap battle at the ABU zaria Sculpture Garden as a young artist, which led to undisclosed figures promising him fame. However, Ziriok admits he was naive and unprepared for the predatory practices of the industry.
The traumatic experience left him devastated, messed him up mentally, and he has to drop out from school for safety and then lose his passion for rap music. Now, Ziriok hopes to mentor youth interested in music to protect them from similar exploitation.
Though grateful for hip-hop, he feels its burden is too heavy to bear alone. By speaking out, Ziriok hopes to guide the next generation of artists.

I was young and naive and just wanted to rap and feel good, l wasn’t prepared for such an encounter.
The whole thing left me devastated messed me up mentally and subsequently academically cos I had to dropped out and be safe again.
Consequently, I lost the vibe to develop my craft and launch into the industry due to lack of mentoring and guide.
Well, we are still here learning on a daily,yet to bring the A game,but most importantly be a guide and a support system to kids that just wanna sing and not to hurt themselves or anybody.
Thank you Hip-hop you are a blessing but the burden is too heavy to bear.”
