President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Comrade Joe Ajaero, said President Bola Tinubu told labour union leaders that he lives in a two-bedroom apartment, as part of measures to reduce the cost of governance.
Ajaero stated this while speaking in an interview with Channels TV’s Politics Today. He said that the NLC had complained to the president about the high cost of governance, and that Tinubu had told them that he had made efforts to reduce his own expenses.
Tinubu said that he had tried to reduce his fleet of cars, but that he had been told that this was a security issue. He also said that he had preferred to use his own private jet, but that he had been told that he must use the government jet for security reasons.
Tinubu added that he was currently living in a two-bedroom apartment, and that he was trying to tighten his belt as much as possible. He said that he would also talk to his staff about reducing their expenses.
The NLC has called off its nationwide protest against the removal of petrol subsidy, after meeting with the president. The union said that it was satisfied with Tinubu’s commitment to reducing the cost of governance.
It remains to be seen whether Tinubu will be able to follow through on his promises to reduce the cost of governance. However, his comments to the NLC suggest that he is serious about tackling this issue.
The president further said that president Tinubu stated “That he’s trying as much as possible to tighten his belt and he will try as much as possible to talk to his people working with him. So, I don’t know what that means,” he added
