The upcoming 2024 Grammy Awards will introduce a fresh category titled ‘Best African Music Performance,’ specifically designed to recognize and celebrate African music.
The official announcement, conveyed on Tuesday afternoon (June 13, 2023) through Twitter, revealed this new addition to the prestigious awards ceremony.
Commencing from the 2024 show, this dedicated category aims to highlight and honor outstanding achievements in African music.
According to the Grammys’ statement, the new category is a track and singles category that recognizes recordings that utilize unique local expressions from across the African continent.
The category is said to include but not limited to Afrobeat, Afro-Fusion, Afro Pop, Afrobeats, Alte, Amapiano, Bongo Flava, Genge, Kizomba, Chimurenga, High Life, Fuji, Kwassa, Ndombolo, Mapouka, Ghanaian Drill, Afro-House, South African Hip-Hop, and Ethio Jazz genres.
