Following the recent protest by students of College of Education Akwanga on the 10th of February 2020 over strike action by the institution which lasted a week, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa state Engr. A.A. Sule gave an order for the immediate call-off of the strike during a closed door meeting at Kini Country Guest Inn Akwanga.
A source after the meeting reported that the Governor had earlier travelled to South Africa for an urgent assignment and was greatly surprised on hearing about uncalled-for situation of the state’s college.
It was reported to Bestxplorer on Friday 14th that the Provost and some other office holders were served papers for the immediate leave of office.
Following the call-off and dethronement, rumors by some students of the college went helter-skelter during the weekend.
While some said that the Provost had embezzled so much money from students by the increase of fee without the awareness of the government, others stressed on how the provost had made studying extremely difficult for them by not really making efforts towards subsidizing other expenses such as paying N1000 or N2000 to lecturers for the signing of course form in the institution.
An unknown student on Monday, 17th February 2020 during an interview with a correspondence of Bestxplorer said;
“This Mrs. Rebecca has not tried for students at all. She doesn’t consider how people are suffering; she doesn’t help students make things easy in the school. She has been the provost for many years and I am sure that all she has been doing is to gather wealth for herself and possibly her family members. Sense can be seen from what I am saying if you have a look at the mansion she lives in at Keffi bypass.”
An anonymous student however objected the first one saying that “the provost has over the years done her best to ensure the smooth run of the college.”
Another student expressed dissatisfaction saying that “there are over-raging departmental dues placed by both lecturers and students on students generally. Also, there is demand for huge amount of money by lecturers for excursions even to no distant places and nothing has ever been done about it by the provost.”
“The college seems to me like a money-making ground because everyone is here to make money. The provost and almost all the staff/lecturers have their ways of extorting money from students and we are really suffering. Education should not be feared because of cost and exploitation; it should be something people have the desire to embrace” she added.
There have been different stories about Dr. Mrs. Rebecca Isaac Umaru who now happens to be the ex-provost of the institution.
It has been gathered that the new Provost resumed office on Monday. She is said to hail from Wamba Local Government Area of the state.
While we hope for an official statement over the sack and replacement of Dr. Mrs. Rebecca Isaac Umaru, this is all that Bestxplorer has for you for now.
Stay tuned for updates.
