The students of the College of Education Akwanga, Nasarawa state yesterday undertook a peaceful protest which was according to a source tagged “A fight for our right to education.”
The institution has since a week ago embarked on an indefinite strike which has since then affected students activities (lectures, among others).
A side of rumor said that the strike came up as a result of the Provost refusing to offer promotion to due staff of the college while another one stated that the Nasarawa state government was responsible for the strike action following the fact that lecturers of the institution had not been paid salaries for two months.
A source however shared that the Nasarawa state governor was in any way whatsoever NOT aware or involved in the action taken by staff of the institution.
During the protest on the 10th of February 2020, men of the Nigeria Police Force together with men of the Nigeria Army surfaced, spraying teargas on students in order to calm the situation.
The students refused giving up. They ran from teargases and returned to speak their mind. Some students complained of paying huge amounts for fee and denied lectures because of the strike. Some others complained of being tired of staying around without attending lectures as that was not what they left their homes for.
Today being the 11th of February 2020, Men of the Nigeria Army surrounded the school, preventing entrance as the school is placed under security control. In order words, the institution will remain on a shutdown until otherwise is decided after resolution.
We at BestXplorer urge both the government and management of the institution to take a quick action on the calling off of the strike as we feel students’ right to education is tampered with.
