Africa is about to experience the blockchain technology in a new dimension. Akon has finally received the approval to build a crypto-based city in Senegal, West Africa. The American-Senegalese Grammy nominee officially signed an agreement with a Senegal based tourism company SAPCO to set up his crypto city.
Akon had set his sights on transforming Africa since 2014 with the “Akon Lighting Africa” project. The project is targeted at providing solar-powered solutions to over 100M Africans without electricity. As a philanthropist, Akon launched his cryptocurrency Akoin which would power a digital city in Senegal. The cryptocurrency is aimed at achieving development across Africa and the world.
Akon took to his Instagram to share the news of his signing the tourism agreement. He wrote, “Just finalized the agreement for AKON CITY in Senegal,” he adds. “Looking forward to hosting you there in the future.” The SAPCO Secretary-General, Aliune Ndiaye explained that the tourism property will be set up in Mbodiene’s seaside village about 75 miles from Dakar, the capital city of Senegal.
Currently, on the Akoin road map, the token is in its listing stage. It concluded its presale/donation phase in September 2019. The token will power a market place and the crypto city. During an interview with Nick Cannon, more details about the tourist village in Senegal were revealed. Akon shared the progress so far saying, “It’s a 10-year building block so we’re doing it in stages.” He adds, “We started construction in March and stage two is going to be 2025.”
We look forward to seeing this project come to life. A crypto-based city powered by renewable energy in the hearts of Africa is definitely something to see.
