As President Muhammadu Buhari makes move to reconcile with the Senate, there are reports that he has made his final decision on Ibrahim Magu, the acting chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Reported that the Senate stopped the screening of 27 resident electoral commissioners due to the continuation of Magu as EFCC chairman in spite of the recommendation of the Senate to the president that he be removed and replaced.
Relationship between the executive and the legislature has also been strained by the refusal of some appointees to appear before the Senate despite invitation to do so.
The President had on Wednesday set up a committee chaired by Professor Yemi Osinbajo to look into the face-off with a view to ending it.
In spite of this, The Punch reported that a presidency source said Buhari has no plan to remove Magu.
The source said that although the president was interested in peace, he would still stick to Magi.
He said: “The President will stick to Magu. Shopping for a replacement is not on the card at the moment.”
The source said members of the peace committee were also former senators who would leverage on their experience to manage the situation.
“The former senators are expected to leverage on their experience in the National Assembly to come up with how to reach out to their former colleagues without necessarily compromising government’s position on the matter.”
The former Senators who are now ministers are: Chris Ngige (Labour and Employment), Udo Udoma (Budget and National Planning), Heineken Lokpobiri (State, Agriculture and Natural Resources), Hadi Sirika (State for Aviation) and Aisha Alhassan (Women Affairs).
Minister who also have personal relationship with lawmakers would also play their own part in the peace move.
