The world’s oldest surgeon scrubs up well at the age of 89 and still cheerily carries out four operations a week.
Alla Ilyinichna Levushkina never married or had children and dedicated her life to saving patients in Russia. At home, Alla cares for her disabled nephew and eight cats .
There’s no secret to her long life, she says, adding: “I eat everything, laugh and cry a lot.”
After 10,000 ops in 67 years and no fatalities, she has no plans to retire. Speaking about her unwavering dedication to the profession, Alla said: “I have nothing to do in retirement.
“It’s not just a profession, it’s a way of life. Why else would the surgeon live, if not to work?” Each day, the inspiring pensioner begins work at 8am, holding a clinic for patients, before heading to the operating room at 11am to start the day’s procedures.
In honour of her incredible commitment, Alla was recently awarded the prize for the best doctor in Russia.
